Kashmir shivers in spring chill

Srinagar, May 18: With most parts of India witnessing scorching heat, people in Kashmir shiver in unusual cold and continue to use woollens to keep themselves warm.
The Meteorological Department here said that cold wave conditions started in Kashmir after Western Disturbances hit the region on Sunday. “Both maximum and minimum temperature remained below normal as intermittent rain was recorded during the past 24 hours,” MeT officials said adding Western Disturbance originating in Arabian sea had hit the region after crossing through Afghanistan and Pakistan. The official said that at higher reaches it was too cold because of continuous inclement weather.
The MeT office Sunday forecast the inclement weather conditions were likely to persist for one more day. “Light rain or thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours. The conditions would generally remain cloudy during the period,” they said adding that a “low pressure system” has developed over J&K state over the past some weeks resulting in frequent rains.
